Wednesday December 6, 2000 B5 y Bone Centre Library opens a t Women' s Centre By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR The Debbie Howe Library has a new home, the W omen's Centre at Hopedale. This library, a resource for women diagnosed with osteoporosis, was created by the May Court Club of Oakville about six years ago. It was kept in the office of Dr. Aliya Khan of Oakville, an osteoporosis specialist and researcher. About five years ago, she opened the Oakville Bone Centre at her Sheddon Avenue office, as a non-profit support centre. The collection was named after Howe who established the Osteoporosis Support Group in 1992. She also produces The Spine Line, a newsletter for osteo porosis patients containing information about new research and treatments, nutrition, and special events. The library, the largest of its kind in Halton, contains books, videos, cassette tapes, m agazines and research papers - many of them written by Dr. Khan. Contained on a wooden library cart, the collection has been added to the Women's Centre's existing library. It has been at the centre for about six months. It was decided to move the library to the Women's Centre, Ste. 210 at Hopedale Shopping Centre, where it will be "more easily accessi ble to a wider audience of women, not just osteoporo sis patients," said Dr. Khan at an Open House for the library recently. "By keeping it at the Oakville Bone Centre, a dif ficulty arises in accessing the library after hours." At the Women's Centre, the collection is available M ondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, evenings and week ends during workshops and courses. "We were able to bridge the gap between the school board and the child care program. We also developed a par ent advisory committee which pians field trips, fund raising activities and open houses." Pilgrim Wood and River Oaks were actually opened at the same time, and within the next two years, an additional three YMCA childcare centres were opened. There are. now seven centres in Oakville run by the YMCA in schools, as well as the newly opened centre in the Ford Central Office building. Pilgrim Wood takes children from two to 11 years of age and is licensed for 54 kids. Right now, 75 families are receiv ing care because some of the kids are part-time. As part of its 10 year anniversary celebration, special activities and songs have been planned with the children and there was an open house, featuring a magician. "Since we opened, word has gotten out to the public about the quality of our care," says Rinaldi. "This has creat ed a larger demand for Pilgrim Wood YMCA Childcare Centre.
