Characters from the W oodland N utcracker will be part of Eatons' Christmas decor for seven o f its new stores, which are set to open later this month. F eaturing w orks by R avel, Faure, M ozart and Van W illiam s, this concert w ill include discussions, dram a and dem o n strations to enhance the listen ing experience. All o f these perform ers are instruc tors at the M erriam School o f M usic and will be available after the concert to m eet w ith audience m em bers. Avril says the bears and other w oodland creatures from their book will take on a life o f their own as life-size like nesses o f the lovable characters w ave from m obile podium s in seven o f Eatons new locations. `T h e Ribbon G ym nast - the polar bear - will be w aving a ribbon, and m other grizzly with the cubs will be turning and w aving," she explains. "A nd there will be (bear) cook ies and chocolates from L aura Secord in decorated boxes and tins. T here will be a bear - I think it's going to be the N utcracker Prince - that will be sold for charity." And, she adds, Karen Kain will be reading the Woodland N utcracker for a CD , w hich will be available at Eatons loca tions w hen they open for business later this month. Proceeds from the sale o f the CD will also be donated to charity. For those w ho w ould like to see the W oodland N u t cracker characters in the Tyrrells' book, the creators will be at G reen G ables Fram ing and A rt Studio, 46 John St., on Friday, Nov. 24th from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 25th from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m . signing copies o f the book. `T h e re will be greeting cards and prints that Frances has done for different fairy tales," adds Avril. C ookies and punch will be served. Frances is a visual artist w ho not only illustrates her books with her own paintings but sells the original paint ings as well. The W oodland N u tcra cker is illustrated by F rances and w ritten by Avril. T he story follow s the original N u tcra cker Suite ballet, except the m ain characters are bears with w oodland creatures as their friends and neighbours. A nd in the w oodland version, C lara leaves her parents' C hristm as party and flies in a h ot air balloon, w ith her anim ated n u t cracker doll, to U rsa M ajor. T his year Frances has developed a new line o f greeting cards titled W onders a n d F airytales, w hich Avril says com es from paintings her d au ghter has done over the years. She has also created reproductions o f the m ost p o p u lar o f those paintings to satisfy num erous requests for them . "S h e's alw ays painting fairy-tale pictures, but she hasn't y et g ot a publisher for them ," explains Avril, ad ding that visitors to G reen G ables this w eekend are w elcom e to w ear their fairy w ings. "I feel so strongly that at C hristm as, there should be som ething totally lighthearted for ch ildren."
