The six-member board unanimously approved the report, Ensuring Optimal Victim Support in Sexual Assault Investigations, at its June 15 meeting at police headquarters in Oakville. Julie Moscato, executive director of the board, delivered the 11-page report. Quick on the heels of that report, the board is was hosting an all-day learning forum in Oakville Wednesday, June 21. The by-invitation gathering is for police and victim advocate agencies. Board members, the new sex assault case handling review team, private security agencies and invited community members were there. Speakers included Sunny Marriner of the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre; clinical psychologist Dr. Lori Haskell on understanding the neurobiology of sexual assault; Terry Fromson, managing attorney of the Women' s Law Project in Philadelphia; and Thomas McDevitt, a retired lieutenant with the special victims unit of the Philadelphia Police Department. Halton police Acting Supt. Anthony Odoardi of the child abuse and sexual assault unit (CASA) gave a brief presentation to the board June 15. "W hat (current) training we are doing for front line officers and CASA members is expansive," he said of sexual assault cases. Odoardi said Halton' s officers get formal training through the Ontario Police College and Canadian Police College, plus supplemental training via private agencies. Deputy police Chief Carol Crowe -- recently returned after almost nine months away for cancer treatments -- told the board in terms of police interviewing a victim of alleged sexual assault, they offer the victim the chance to speak to an officer of the gender of their choice. However, due to varying caseloads and officer availability, it is not always possible to provide an officer of their choice of gender for the duration of an investigation. Chief Stephen Tanner said Halton police always take cases of sexual assault seriously. "The court process re-victimizes victims quite often ... We are fully supportive of this (case review) process. We exist for victims; we are very victim-centered here. · · · The report accepted last week by the police services board members included five recommendations. see New on p.8 F SPORTSeries 1 shown Bhandari Family Dentistry returns to Oakville BRING iN YOUR FAMILY FOR A CHECK-UP AT OUR NEW MODERN CLiNIC Dr. Bhandari is an advocate of oral health with 31 years of experience.
