St. Dominic's marks milestones of 150 years of Canada continued from p.1 time capsule, to be buried for 10 years. Those guests included Ontario Labour Min ister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn; Oakville MP John Oliver; Ward 1 Town Councillor Ralph Robinson; Katharine Cirillo, mother of the late Corporal Nathan Cirillo; Carol Mitchell, mother of the late Corporal Robert Mitchell; Elder Garry Sault, of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation; and, several Armed Forces veterans, among others. Items placed in the capsule ranged from pho tos, memorial pins to recognize Canada' s 150th birthday, Lorne Scots Regiment and Vimy Ridge, and an Oakville flag, to thank-you cards, poems, badges, notes and books, including St. Dominic students' We Remember, interviews with local veterans. "Today is a very special day. We celebrate the upcoming 150th anniversary of Canada - a country that has given us the freedom to be who we want to be, to worship as we see fit and to de velop our talents to the best of our abilities," said Aidan Cristiano, the Grade 7 student co-emcee. "We recognize Canada' s birthday and contin ued prosperity could not have been achieved without our men and women in uniform." Fellow Grade 7 co-emcee Machaela Fournier said another generation of students and Oakvillians will open the toolbox that served as the time capsule in 2027, and remember those who made "our community, province and country safe and strong." Fallen soldier/veteran tributes Grade 3 students crafted cards and letters that express their patriotism and love of the commu nity, including a birthday card to Canada, a letter to the families of fallen soldiers, a letter to local veterans and a birthday card to St. Dominic' s.
