Halton Region, police and its services board have partnered together to develop a Community Safety & Well-Being Plan that will co-ordinate local government, community and volunteer resources to make Halton neighbourhoods safer, healthier and more successful. As part of the process, the three groups are seeking improvements to the draft version of the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which has been created in consultation with dozens of community groups and agencies in the last year. A public forum in Oakville, one of three in Halton, took place Tuesday, June 20 at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, Black Box Theatre, 2302 Bridge Rd., from 6-8 p.m. Halton residents, service providers, community agencies, businesses and others with an interest in community safety and well-being were invited to attend public consultations to learn about the plan and provide input. Once adopted, the plan will establish ways to strengthen how the Region, Halton police and community partners work together to support vulnerable populations to make them safer. A draft of the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan is ready for review and Halton Region and police are soliciting comments and suggestions. "Building safer and healthier communities is a shared responsibility," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "The plan expands on our commitment to work with the Halton Regional Police Service and community partners by creating a model to identify and address emerging issues and trends that impact safety and well-being in our community." Community safety and well-being planning is about "proactively responding to issues in our communities in areas such as mental health, neighbourhood safety, addictions, housing and homelessness and social isolation," stated a Halton Region media release. The plan is ensure those who need help receive the "right response at the right time," instead of after a crisis develops. "Responding to community needs is at the forefront of our community policing approach," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, chair of Halton Regional Police Services Board. "Halton' s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan will enable us to respond to issues as they emerge and before they take deeper root." A public consultation also took place Tuesday, June 20 in Burlington. Other sessions will also be held at the following locations: ·TuesdayJune 27, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Gellert Community Centre (Kinsmen Hall B), 10241 8 Line, Georgetown · Wednesday, July 12, 6 to 8 p.m., Milton Sports Centre (Optimist Room), 605 Santa Maria Blvd., Milton To register for one of the consultation forms, visit www. halton.ca/safetyandwell-being.
