We beat very strong teams from Eton, Westminster and St Paul' s Girls School. Since we knew this was an international tournament, and being the first tournament outside Canada we attended, we flew in to Cambridge feeling hopeful but humble. The four rounds of debate included complex topics like "this house would not give developmental aid to oppressive regimes or this house supports hacking as a form of social protest," Chen said, as they all tackled political, social and philosophical questions. In the individual standings, Chen and Saleh placed 7th and 8th, respectively, out of 96 debaters. "Everyone at the tournament showed so much passion and curiosity for the subjects debated and several of them were ones we've previously studied with our coach (and WOSS teacher) Hamish Guthrie," said Chen. As a member, the Grade 12 student competed against more than 100 competitors from 10 different countries in four categories -- persuasive speaking, interpretive reading, impromptu speaking and parliamentary debate. He advanced to the finals of each category and placed third overall in impromptu speaking and fourth overall in the world for all four categories combined. The 17-year-old received an invitation to join Team Canada after representing Team Ontario at the National Qualifier for Debate and Public Speaking held in Winnipeg, Man. earlier this year. Nikhil Gowd "With such a high quality of competition, it was difficult to know what the outcome would be. I was very happy with my results, especially because it is my last year of competitive public speaking," Gowd told the Oakville Beaver in an email. "I was proud the last four years of hard work had culminated into these results." He said there were two "major aspects" to the tournament - quality of the competition and the opportunity to meet people from around the world. "Throughout the entire trip I was surrounded by a diverse range of political and social viewpoints, which contributed to the dynamic nature of the competition," said Gowd, who began competitive debating and public speaking in Grade 9. "The calibre of the other speakers provided a very enjoyable experience and pushed me to compete at the best of my ability." In his spare time, Gowd helps mentor younger students in the school's debating club.
