www.insidehalton.com |OAKVILLE BEAVER |Thursday, June 8, 2017 |1 0 Changes would modernize Ontario's emergency response system continued from p.3 immediate response to medical emergencies and may redirect, in a timely and convenient manner, those with non-urgent needs. Greg Sage, chief/director of Halton Paramedic Services, called the new proposed medical dispatch system "very good news," as the Region has been advocating for an upgrade to the medical triage procedure at the communications centre for some time. He noted there would be some paramedic training required, but Sage doesn' t expect it to be extensive. "We will certainly be having to update some of our processes and make sure the staff are all familiar with the changes. But, we're certainly very happy (it is) moving forward with the new algorithm," said Sage. However, not everybody is happy. CUPE, the union that represents about 6,000 paramedics and dispatch/communication officers province-wide, issued a statement on its website that warned changes could result in "negative outcomes" for patients and Ontarians in a medical emergency trauma. "To improve response times, what' s needed is increasing the capacity of ambulance services to put more paramedics on the road. That' s something that would cost much less than putting paramedics on firetrucks and save more lives," said CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn. The Ontario government plans to update the Ambulance Act to ensure patients receive the "right care at the right time." "Our government is committed to improving and modernizing our emergency health services system. By improving the system, we are delivering timely, high-quality care across Ontario," said Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, in the release.
