C C D NO For 10 years, HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) has been serving vulnerable families in Oakville. HIPPY is an international, research-based program that provides a free pre-school education, delivered by peer home visitors, who are employed by HIPPY Oakville, to mothers in their own homes. The moms then pass on the education to their children. HIPPY Oakville serves 58 mothers who have 65 children, collectively speaking 21 languages. The program has helped more than 100 families this year. Home visitors spend an hour each week with each of the mothers they serve. They roleplay the week's curriculum together -- with five days of activities based on children's literature. The mother teaches her own child the activities for that week. This process is repeated for each strengthen relationships with their children, English literacy skills and their understanding of expectations at school. At the end of each year, HIPPY holds a celebration of learning where the children and their mothers receive a certificate, enjoy a clown's magic show and have lunch. This year's celebration was held Tuesday, May 30 at the Oakville YMCA. HIPPY Oakville receives funding from the Trillium Foundation of Ontario, the Region of Halton and the United Way Halton and Hamilton.
