James by M arta M a ry ch u k Oakville Beaver Staff The provincial government announced plans on June 19 to build a new elementary school in Oakville that would accommodate 527 elementary school students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 -- from St. Joseph and St. James Catholic Elementary Schools. Ontario Education Minister Mitzie Hunter made the announcement at St. Joseph, along with Ontario Labour Minister and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn and Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris, Minister Responsible for Early Years and Child Care. The new school would be located on the current St. Joseph property on Warminster Drive. "I am thrilled the application for funding has been approved," said Diane Rabenda, Halton District Catholic School Board (HCSB) Chair, adding the new school will provide enhanced opportunities for special programming and extra-curricular activities. Construction of the new school will begin in 2018 and conclude in 2019. During the construction period, students from St. Joseph will be bussed to St. James on Morden Road. Antonia Pinelli, HCSB superintendent of education, said the St. James school facility would house an alternative and adult education centre. St. Joseph elementary school was constructed more than 50 years ago. "This is an important investment in the students and community in Oakville," added Flynn. "This new school will be a terrific addition to our vibrant community" Pinelli said a transition team would be established to consult on logistics as well as decide on how to proceed with a possible new name for the school. "We want children in Ontario to learn and grow in school environments that help them reach their full potential," said Naidoo-Harris, in a press release. "This new elementary school will give Oakville students the support they need to be successful right from their very first day of Junior Kindergarten. I'm pleased that our government is working hard to give our kids the best start in life." Declining enrolment and aging facilities was said to be at the heart of the closures. St. James School, located at 255 Morden Rd. was originally established in 1956 to serve a new growth area in central Oakville of St. Andrew' s parish. It now serves a broad multicultural school population. W hen the new St. Joseph school is ready, St. James will be closed and converted to the Oakville Thomas Merton Adult Learning Centre. ebrate Canada Day * w h y Y M O R E ?
