w w w .insidehalton.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 9, 2 0 1 7 | 2 6 Jazz concert could launch new summer-long series by Nathan Howes Oakville Beaver Staff A N D T H E W I N N E R S A R E When Oakville resident Oliver Vadas learned the popular jazz festival -- traditionally held in downtown Oakville -- was changing its format to a summer music event, his hrst instinct was to step into the fray. He was keen to launch his own jazzfocused event, and set to work organizing it. The West End Jazz Series is a monthly summer concert series put together by Vadas, a producer. The hrst show, considered to be a pilot, will include dinner and is set to take place Thursday, June 22 at the Harbour Banquet & Conference Centre in Bronte. "I had to do something. I sat down with one of the (musicians) during a recording session and said, `W hy don't we just do a series instead of a jazz festival?' Everybody liked the idea," said Vadas. However, the success of that hrst performance will determine whether the series will continue with shows in July, August and September, admitted Vadas. "If it works out, it will be better than the jazz festival. If it happened on a date when somebody is out of town, they would have to wait a year. This way, they have hve dates (if it continues)," said Vadas. The June 22 headliner will be the Swing Shift Big Band, an 18-piece group that will feature vocals from Larisa Renee, Laura Fernandez, host of Cafe Latino on Jazz FM and the event, and Dave Statham. Opening the show is Oakville-based High Rendition Jazz Band, a youth band. "These are really high-level professionals," said Vadas. "We put the program together already. We will see if we can raise the necessary funds. We will have hve dates. July will be a double bill." The West End Jazz Series pilot concert will take place Thursday, June 22 at the Harbour Banquet & Conference Centre, 2340 Ontario St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. The cost for show and dinner (before June 10) is $45. Admission at the door is $55. For show only, the cost is $15 (before June 10). Admission at the door is $20. Donations are also being accepted to keep the series operational. Those contributing more than $100 will receive a pair of tickets to an upcoming event of their choice. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.westendjazz. ca/. The Oakville Literary Cafe announced the three winners of its poetry contest: Olivia Teti, Elizabeth Barnes and Kamal Parmar. The winners were selected for their poems written in response to Louise Laroche's paintings, on exhibit in April at Joshua Creek Art Centre Gallery. Certain specific words were to be used and woven into the poems in response to the art. All three poets reportedly showed a high degree of craft and poetic hair.
