If the plug is fired too late or too soon, power and efficiency can be compromised. An engine that is out of tim e can also be hard to start and a source of headaches w hen it com es to `pinging' or engine knock (which can severely dam age the engine). Here are the components involved in the timing of an engine. What is timing? Simply put, timing is the relationship between the piston's position in the cyTinder -- measured in crankshaft degrees before or after the piston is in the top-dead-center position and the time at which the spark plug is fired. Th e spark plug fires when the rotor lines up with the appropriate post in the cap. SEBR INC C O N V E R T IB L E Adjustment Adjusting the timing is relatively easy on older cars with distributors. New cars with crankshaft-fired ignition systems are too complicated for most backyard mechanics to handle. The only way to adjust the timing is to rotate the housing of the distributor, which delays or advances the time before or after top dead center that the spark plug is fired.
