MANY GREAT STRUCTURES PLANNED OR UNDER WAY

MILLIONS WILL BE SPENT THIS YEAR ON FURTHER CHANGES TO TORONTO'S EVER-RISING SKYLINE

Toronto will have an even greater right to place among the cities of the continent, from the point of view of architecture on the completion of the buildings reproduced above from architects' drawings. A group shows a number of the larger buildings which are to be erected in this year, if the plans of all promoters are carried out.

In the UPPER row from LEFT to RIGHT are shown: The Hotel Toronto which Crown Realty Investment Company propose to erect on south side of Richmond Street, between Yonge and Bay streets; Yorkminster Baptist Church, to be a new home of the Bloor Street Baptist congregation, which is under construction on Yonge and Heath; the new [...] of Crown & Blackwell, Limited, which will be Bathurst Streets, which will be erected at corner of Fleet and Bathurst streets, and a new office building for southwest corner of Bay and Temperance streets being erected by the Commercial Lands and Buildings, Limited. The architects are S. B. Coon & Son, Toronto.

CENTRE LEFT: The new terminal building planned for the northeast corner of Bay and Front Streets. The total cost will be about $2,500,000. N. A. Armstrong & Company are the architects.

CENTRE RIGHT: A four-story building for the southwest corner of Bay and Charles streets. Plans were prepared by T. E. Muir [...]

LOWER, LEFT TO RIGHT: The loft and office building which is planned for the northwest corner of Spadina Avenue and Adelaide Street. Benjamin Brown is the architect. The Medical Arts Building which Crown Realty Investment Company proposed to erect on College Stret immediately west of the Central Y.M.C.A. The "Commerce" Building, to be erected at the northeast corner of Albert and Bay Streets (Chapman & Oxley, architects) at a cost of about $500,000; another physicians' and surgeons' building, planned for the southeast corner of College and McCaul Streets; and the new Ford Hotel, to be located at the northeast corner of Dundas street. The cost is estimated at about $2,000.000.

Notes

ARMSTRONG, Norman Alexander (1882-1957) was a prolific designer of residential and commercial buildings in the Toronto area. Born in Queenston, Ont. on 2 September 1882 he attended public and high schools in Niagara Falls and gained his knowledge of architecture with the Toronto architect J.W. Siddall.
Upon his return from United States to Toronto in 1919 he opened his own office called the N.A. Armstrong Company Ltd., specializing in engineering and architectural projects. Throughout the 1920's and 1930's Armstrong adapted to changing tastes in design as he offered his residential clients a variety of schemes in Tudor, Colonial or Georgian Revival styles.
An exceptional yet underrated work from this period is the International Harvester Co. Showroom, Bathurst Street, Toronto (1939), with its refined detailing executed in brick, art stone and plate glass.
Active until the early 1950's Armstrong turned over much of the work in his office to his son William G., and died at Toronto on 4 May 1957.
