Maintenance work on runway 05 / 23 at Toronto Pearson airport has caused a substantial change in the usual pattern of runway and airspace use, Helios Principal Consultant Nick Boud stated in an email. With this change in traffic patterns, Boud said there has been an increase in interest in the airspace review and the recommendations that Helios are considering. Due to this increased interest, NAV CANADA has asked Helios to allow all community members to continue to submit comments up to Wednesday, May 31. In 2016, NAV CANADA announced that Helios, a UK-based consultant, would lead an independent Toronto airspace review to study: the current situation regarding air traffic management practices, flight path design and aircraft operating practices relating to flights arriving and departing Toronto Pearson airport. This change means Helios is unable to honour its commitment to deliver the final presentation by the end of June, said Boud. A new date for the final presentation has yet to be determined. Oakville will have to wait for the independent review of airplane noise as construction at Toronto Pearson Interna tional Airport will delay the final report from the third party Toronto airspace review being conducted by Helios. | Metroland Media Air traffic noise became a big problem for Oakville in 2012, when NAV CANADA (a privately-run, non-profit corporation that owns and operates Canada' s civil air navigation system) made changes to the flight paths for airplanes. Work on runway 05/23, which is Canada' s busiest, is a rehabilitation project and not an expansion project, according to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA). The GTAA is responsible for operating Toronto Pearson International Airport. Toronto Pearson is the second-largest airport in North America in terms of inbound international traffic, according to the GTAA. hast year, 44 million passengers travelled through the airport and 500,000 tonnes of cargo was transported across the world. As part of the review, Helios conducted an eight-month consultation and engagement process, including three rounds of public meetings. The original deadline for public submissions was March 30. The deadline was pushed back to give residents more opportunity to submit their views and comments. Comments can be submitted by email to the following address -- TorontoAirspaceReview@ askhelios.com. Updates to the review' s website can be found at wwwTorontoAirspaceReview. ca. A new document also has been added to the studies website that provides an overview of the three studies Helios is currendy delivering for either NAV CANADA or the GTAA. The final report, which will be made public, will present a number of recommendations to NAV CANADA, who will then decide on which recommendations to implement.
