| Thursday, May 4 , 2 0 1 7 | 20 Awkward to ask for, and offer, a kidney, audience hears continued from p.18 "My brother looked at me and said, ` When can we do this?'" said McCarthy. While not close growing up, with typical sibling acrimony, McCarthy said she was more worried about her brother than herself. "Everything went great," she said. "It' s like being born again." Within a few days, McCarthy was walking around and didn' t feel any pain. Her brother experienced a complication from medication, but quickly rebounded. Nick and his wife Jen Muffitt took part in a paired exchange transplant, where Jen travelled to British Columbia to donate her kidney to a man. The recipient then donated his kidney to Nick, who had his surgery done in Ontario. Nick spoke of his kidney transplant as "giving their daughter the gift of her father back". Susan Pattison, who works at the nephrology clinic at Halton Healthcare, donated her kidney to a mutual friend, named Heather, who she met playing euchre. Having worked in the hospital more than 30 years, Pattison said she saw what happened to patients as their health deteriorated, and was determined to helping Heather. It' s awkward to ask someone to transplant a kidney, said Pattison, adding that it' s awkward to offer, too. Pattison sent an email to Heather, offering to donate a kidney. "I was afraid she would think that I was a crackpot." The transplant went well. Pattison was in hospital for three days and off work eight weeks. "Heather is doing well and I'm doing great," added Pattison. "These stories are amazing," said Dr. Sanjay Pandeya, a nephrologist at Halton Healthcare. "I want to thank you all for your stories." According to Halton Healthcare, every three days someone dies in Ontario because the life-saving organ transplant they need is not available.
