Connecting schools to farms and children to their food is a simple idea that has inspired the spread of Farm to School activ ity across Canada, according to Nancy Rumple, communications director for Halton' s Food for Thought, which connected the program to the school. Oakwood Public School is the second Halton Food for Thought partner school to launch its healthy eating initiative. St. Dominic Catholic Elemen tary School launched the same program in February. It' s aimed at getting more healthy local foods on the minds, on the plates and in the mouths of students by engaging students and communities in gardening, cook ing, preserving, purchasing and serving healthy local foods at their schools, said Rumple. This year, Farm to Cafeteria Canada and Sustain Ontario part nered with Whole Kids Founda tion to invest $500,000 in Farm to School Salad Bar Programs. "Our Farm to School program is part of a growing network of Farm to School programs champi oned provincially by Sustain Ontarios Edible Education Network and nationally by Farm to Cafete ria Canada," Rumple said. Along with a dozen other lo cal food enthusiasts and special guests, Associate Director, Halton District School Board (HDSB), Da vid Boag was on-hand to help cele brate the Farm Feast Launch, take part in a lunch with the students and receive a special parting gift of Mini and Mighty Microgreens handmade by Oakwood students.
