Buffalo, however, are a much improved team this year, currently atop the provincial junior A standings, and they beat the Blades, currently in last place, 6-3 Friday nighL The Blades lost the second game of their weekend twin bill, 7-4 to Bramalea Blues on Sunday night Blades get the Blues By M att Schurenko SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Chris Pethick, a graduate of the Oakville Rangers hock ey system, had a hot night with two goals and an assist but it was not enough to lift the cold Oakville Blades out of their early season slump as they fell 7-4 to the visiting Bramalea Blues in provincial junior A hockey action Sunday night. The other Blade markers were scored by Rob Tarantino and Mike Howes. Other assists went to Marc Pinizzotto, Bryan McLoughlin, Chris Riddell and brothers Matt Ruberto and Mike Ruberto. Oakville opened up the scoring which would turn out to be their only lead of the game. Bramalea scored the next four goals, forcing the Blades to play catch-up for the rest of the night. They cut the deficit to 4-2 by the end of the second period and to a tan talizing 4-3 early in the third period but that's as close as the Blades would get. Bramalea pulled away again on a pair of goals for a 6-3 lead. The Blades did manage to capitalize on some late game pressure, pulling to within 6-4 but any thoughts of a miracle comeback were snuffed out by a late Bramalea empty netter. The loss dropped the clearly struggling Blades to 1-9-2 on the young season and frustration is clearly setting in. Blades coach Jay Anderson wasn't in a talking mood after the game. It was evident that Oakville still has some improvements to make, especially on defence. Too many times they allowed a Bramalea forward to simply deke past them and come in close to the goalie for a smooth, uncontested shot. Offensively, they looked decent, that is when they weren't playing short-handed hockey. It seemed that just as the Blades were gaining any sort of momentum one of their players would be called for a senseless penalty like rough ing. They did a good job of staving off the powerplay, but at the expense of their offensive rhythm. The tone of the game was very physical and rough. UPCOMING Things were definitely not about to get any easier for the last-place Blades as their upcoming schedule led them through the second, third and fourth best teams in the west ern conference (according to the standings in today's paper). Last night (Tuesday), the Blades were in Milton (the game went beyond our press deadlines). On Friday, the Blades host the Brampton Capitals (7:45 p.m. at Ice Sports Oakville) and on Saturday they're in Georgetown.
