A2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday September 27,2000 2000 Y E A R -E N D "COUGAR" CLEAROUT T h e y r o d e to c l e a r t h e a ir Sunday's first annual Bike for Clean Air, sponsored by the Halton Lung Association, raised $1,500. The event, held at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, drew 60 partici pants, who followed a 20-km. route through the Glen Abbey Trails. "For a first time event, I think we did really well," comments Wendy Chamie, executive director and development manager of the Halton Lung Association. "We had a lot of people come in groups, members of different cycling organizations." One participant, Carrie Ann Wright, raised $500, enough to receive a bike from event sponsor Cyclepath. The bicycle retailer also gave all participants free bike tuneups after the ride. The money raised will go to the Lung Association's clean air initia tive to "clean the air in Halton," says Chamie, "to encourage people to go cycling instead of going for a Sunday drive. Mamie Denton will join the board as its full time communications officer, starting Oct. 2nd. Denton is described as having extensive expe rience in education communications, having worked most recently as manager of communica tions and publications with York University. The board's education director said 107 people initially sought the job. "Some outstanding people applied for the posi tion and we shortlisted the field to two persons," Dusty Papke told a board meeting last week. The hiring was prompted by the board's Mission 2000+ strategic plan, which was approved several weeks ago. Communication was cited as a major area of improvement for the board. Establishing a communications and communi ty relations department was among the recom mendations Papke said the communications officer hiring "is a major step towards implementing the prima ry focus of our strategic plan." He said superintendent Gary Sadler will head a committee to help determine and implement com munication initiatives. "Communications is a priority for us as an organization which serves the public," said Papke. "With the addition of Mamie to our team, we are excited about the positive things that will be hap pening in terms of internal and external communi cations."
