B2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday September 13, 2000 Walking 800 kilometres in Spain for Nina's Place B y W ilm a B lo k h u is BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR Lucille Roy is about to make a pil grimage. Having left on Tuesday to visit a sis ter in France, Roy will embark on her trek along the 800-kilometre foot path known as the El Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of St. James, across northern Spain next Monday (Sept. 18th). Her pilgrimage will be part spiritual, and part charity. Meet the Team A C O N T I N U I N G SERIES P R O F IL IN G THE STAFF OF " C A N A D A 'S BEST C O M M U N I T Y N E W S P A P E R " Teri C asas as Business Manager of the O akville Beaver, acts as the "den mother" of the newspaper-overseeing all of the administration, accounting and human resources needs of the Beaver's various departments. Employed w ith the paper's parent company Metroland for the past 17 years, Teri enjoys the pace of a newspaper environment and the diversity the job provides. "There is alw ays som ething happening at the Beaver. Life is never dull in this work environment. Mmi There is no time to be bored." When not balancing the books and liasing w ith the various departments, Teri enjoys hiking, theater, opera, visiting museums and travelling. Having read about plans to establish Nina's Place, named in memory of Nina de Villiers, a Burlington teen who was sexually assaulted and murdered, Roy, a Glen Abbey resident, decided to turn her pilgrimage into a fundraiser. "I've read about Chantal's Place doing well Mississauga, and I think Nina's Place will do the same for the residents of Halton." To date, she's raised between $4,000 and $5,000 for Nina's Place. "Having worked in an emergency department years ago, I can recall some very unfortunate incidents of women being brought in by police, by family and friends, or arriving by themselves, and there was no privacy (in emer gency). Nina's Place will shelter the women, give her some dignity and safety." N ina's Place is a sexual assault/domestic violence centre being built at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington as its Millennium project. It is scheduled to open in spring of 2001. The centre, supported by Halton Women's Place, Halton Rape Crisis Centre and the Halton Regional Police Service, will consist of five rooms in 650 square feet of space, including a waiting room/lounge, and children's playroom. Nurses will be available 24 hours a day. They can also act as expert witnesses in prosecuting offenders. Roy, who lived in Spain 22 years ago, was motivated to make the trek upon viewing an exhibition on the Camino by artist Lupe Rodriguez at the University of Toronto at the end of June. "I know about the Camino and had always planned to do it." (See `Woman plans . . . ' page B3) Photo by Barrie Erskine Lucille Roy ties her hiking boots in preparation for another practice walk, with backpack full of gear strapped to her back, before leaving for Spain to walk the El Camino de Santiago to raise funds for Nina's Place.
