Wednesday, September 6, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Open is completely sold out The Bell Canadian Open has completely sold out. The Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) which runs the Open announced on Tuesday that all tickets have been completely sold out for the entire four rounds from Thursday through to Sunday. Sunday's final round, of course, was sold out just hours after Tiger Woods' Thursday announce ment that he would be teeing it up at venerable old Glen Abbey. It came as no surprise to the Glen Abbey-based RCGA, that the end result would be the first-ever complete sellout of the Bell Canadian Open. It's fitting, since, as has been well publicized on these pages, the Open is hitting the road after this year's tournament. The Bell Canadian Open will be played at Royal Montreal next year and at Angus Glen in 2002 and is then slated to move around, although it will still come back to Glen Abbey for what will amount to four more times over the next 18 years. Although the Open has actually been played at 36 different sites since it kicked off in 1904, it has been all but exclusive to Oakville since the Jack Nicklaus-designed Glen Abbey started hosting it in 1977. The only two misses were in 1980 and 1997 when it went to Royal Montreal. The RCGA is taking the Open back out on the road after selling Glen Abbey to ClubLink last year. In all, this year's event will host 35,000 specta tors daily -- the maximum number of spectators Glen Abbey can host without jeopardizing the continuity of the event for players and fans alike. "We are thrilled with the responses we have received," said tournament director Bill Paul. "The Bell Canadian Open has never before experienced such a demand for tickets. "It is unfortunate that we can't accommodate everyone who wants to attend but we need to ensure that the Bell Canadian Open is conducted in an effective and safe manner. "We are committed to accommodating specta tors and we ask that they be patient with crowds and line-ups." The Bell Canadian Open is the third oldest national championship in the world behind the British Open and the U.S. Open. The Bell Canadian Open is also the second old est tournament on the PGA Tour, following the Advil Western Open. The world's best professional golfers will com pete for $3.3 million U.S. Info on RCGA programs can be found at www.rcga.org.
