W hen the season started last fall, Verdon had previously coached only five players on the roster, with 10 more com ing from nine different teams. Last weekend in Kapuskasing, his Rang ers, representing the Ontario Minor Hockey Association, finished a surprisingly success ful season by w inning the Ontario Hockey Federation championship. It' s only the second time an MOHA team has accomplished the feat. "W hile the medals and hats are awesome, being able to com e back from deficits, learn ing what it takes to be a great teammate, and seeing the benefits of discipline and sacrifice -- these are the lessons that the boys will take away from this," said Verdon. The Rangers, ranked No. 5 in the prov ince, managed to edge Cambridge, ranked fourth, in the rematch to gain the OHF title. The Rangers were 3-1 in the round-robin portion and advanced to the championship game with a 3-1 semifinal victory over Port Credit. Oakville fell behind 1-0 in the final but three second-period goals in a span of under three m inutes proved to be the difference. Kael Carey and Stevie Flynn -- w ho along with Simon McCabe scored 50 goals this season -- were the other two Ranger goalgetters. Goalie W ill Forbes, w ho rotated starts with Angelo Turco this season, earned the w in for Oakville. "Every skater on the team got a point dur ing the tournament and if that isn't the defi nition of a team, I don't know what is," said Pat Carey, an assistant coach for the Rang ers along with Brian Birchenough, Anthony Turco and Allen Elson. Oakville had to defeat the province' s top-ranked peewee A1 squad, Essex, in an OMHA six-point semifinal series. The Rangers came back from a 5-1 deficit, w in ning three straight games, to advance to the OMHA final, where they disposed of Aurora, going 3-0-1. The provincial title wrapped up a sea son in w hich the Rangers finished with an overall record of 63-16-6, w hich included a first-place finish in the Tricounty League and an overtime victory (on a Daniel Verdon goal) over No. 2-ranked W hitby to w in the Brampton Regional Silver Stick tournament during the Christmas break. Verdon figures more than half of the play ers will m ove up to the AA level next year in minor bantam, but he'll continue to coach A level w ith the minor bantams. The girls w ent 4-0, includ ing a 31-14 victory in the final over Waterloo Royal City in a battle of undefeated teams. Vytis finished the season on an 11-1 run, a one-point loss preventing the team from a 12-game w in streak. On average, nine players on the 13-girl roster scored in each game. In the final against Wa terloo, Claudia Da Silva led Vytis with six points, followed by Georgi Brinton with five, Katie Yamka and Kristen DiGiovanni with four each, Malina Lopez, Alyssa Stephenson and Maya Corbett with three each, Stella Sgro with two and Romina Passafiume with one. Other contributors to the w in included Alia O'Connell, Ziva Amon Kavcic, Manon Grincourt and Katelynn Dienesch. Al Samsa coached the team with Peter Sgro and Alia Tewari as assistant coaches.
