Oakville Legions com m em orate Battle ofVim y Ridge w ith parade by Marta Marychuk Oakville Beaver Staff 25 |Thursday, April 6, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 114, and the Bronte Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 486, will take part in a parade to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The battle, which took place on April 9, 1917, is considered a turning point in Canadian history, where the four Canadian divisions fought together as a unified fighting force for the first time. While 3 ,5 9 8 Canadian soldiers were killed during the battle, the victory over German forces is regarded as the start of Canada' s evolution from dominion to independent nation. The parade will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 9, starting from the Bronte Legion, 79 Jones St. The parade will travel from the Bronte Legion, west on Lakeshore Boulevard to the Cenotaph on the south side of Lakeshore just west of Bronte Road. The ceremony will be finished by 11:20 a.m., at which time the parade will march back to the Legion. Parade Commander Mike Vencel says they anticipate about 200 people will take part in the parade, including the Legion' s Colour Parade Commander Mike Vincel, Bronte Legion Party, Halton Police Pipe Band and the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Band.
