Oakville Hydro publicly released the statistics on Monday, March 27. The 3.65 per cent reduction, equivalent to a savings of 6.2 m W h in energy, was slightly lower than the 3.7 per cent or 6.5 MWh conserved in 2016. Launched in 2 0 0 7 as a World Wildlife Fund (W W F) effort in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour is now a global lights-out/power down effort to encourage individuals, businesses and governments to take accountability for their ecological footprint. One hour per year For one hour on a single March night every year, from 8 :3 0 -9 :3 0 p.m. local time, residents are encouraged to turn off non-essential lights and unplug electronics. "Every year, Earth Hour is a reminder of the global importance of climate change and conservation," stated Rob Lister, Oakville Hydro president and CEO , in a media release.
