"The modern quilts with thread painting and all the tiny bits were greeted with `oohs' and `aahs'. We brought many quilts with us, antique, modern, wall, etc., and the children loved touching and examining them. There was no cost to the students or school, and teachers would not be asked to undertake any additional work or planning, said Hunter. The project seemed a perfect fit for the guild' s anniversary and also as the special exhibit for its show Stitches in Our Time in April, she said. "We wanted half an hour or so to present our talk and slide show and then to schedule sewing times with the students." She began last July with a quilt camp with a group of home-schooled children and in September 2 0 1 6 began scheduling sewing sessions in the schools. All blocks were completed in December 2 0 1 6 and sent to the quilters to be assembled into the quilt and then returned to the guild for quilting. "My husband, Bill, does all the quilting on a longarm machine. The finished tops then went back to the guild membership for binding and labelling. I will be scheduling return visits to the schools after the March break. At that time, the time of the `Big Reveal', the children will name their quilts and submit a piece of writing to be hung with them at the show in April." According to Hunter, guild members wholeheartedly supported the project and many have been involved from the beginning of the school year. Among the guild member' s favourite anecdotes was when a Grade 7 math teacher came to members and said she was "dumping her plans and concentrating on the math in quilting for the next week as that was all they were talking about. In math class, the boys were discussing and comparing their `sewing techniques'." "Another young man sincerely inquired where he could get one of these quilting machines, and several tried to sneak their way in to make a second block to take hom e." Hunter said.
