After finishing first in the league with a record of 3 1 -3 -4 , the Hornets will host the league's championship at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex with games beginning to day (Friday). Also vying for the title will be the thirdplace Toronto Aeros (2 6 -8 -4 ) and the fourth-place Durham W est Lightning (2 4 6 -8 ). The Mississauga Chiefs earned the final spot in the championship by rallying from a 2 -0 series deficit to beat second-place W hit by in five games. Oakville advanced by beating Burlington and Stoney Creek, taking each best-of-five series in four games. The Hornets open the championship weekend with a 9 a.m. game today against Mississauga. They face Durham W est at 6 p.m. and wrap up the round-robin at 2 p.m. Saturday against Toronto. After the round-games, teams will be ranked first to fourth. The Rangers edged Barrie 3-2 in the final to capture the five-team tournament. | photo submitted Rangers win second straight OMHA title The host Oakville Rangers edged Barrie 3-2 to win the Ontario Minor Hockey Associa tion minor peewee AAA championship last weekend. It's the second OMHA title in a row and the third in four years for the group of 2005-b orn players. Nicki Lardis scored the winning goal for the Rangers, who also had tallies by Matthew Soto and Tyson Rowan. The two finalists qualified for the champi onship games by finishing first and second in the tournament round-robin. Oakville had eight points and Barrie totalled six. Thirdplace Niagara and fourth-place Southern Tier played for the OMHA bronze medal, with Ni agara winning 4-1. Quinte was the fifth team competing in the tournament. The OMHA title caps a season in which the Rangers finished first with a 2 8-3-5 record in regular-season play. Overall, Oakville was 6 1 9-6 and won the Richard Bell Memorial tour nament as well. Other members of the team include Sawyer Luik, Mason Zebeski, Calum Ritchie, Luke Misa, Quaid Beaudry, Jacob Reigate, Owen Pagniello, Bronson Ride, Ben McKenna, Andrew Brown, Jacob Crisp, Cody O'Neill, Brayden Gillespie and Cole Stevens. The team staff includes head coach Jaan Luik, assistant coaches Aaron Jarc, Bob Zebeski and Pat Ritchie, goalie coach Jeff Allen, trainer David Gillespie and manager Mike Lardis. Two minutes after the Cougars' Tyler Riter was stopped on a penalty shot at tem pt by Brendan McGlynn, the Blades took the lead for good at the 1 0 :3 3 mark of the second period on Reeves' second goal of the night. Bryce Misley upped the Oakville lead 11:12 into the third period to end the scoring. McGlynn stopped 3 0 shots in the Oakville net for the win while the Cougars' Mario Cavaliere blocked 3 4 shots in a losing cause.
