A8 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 9, 2000 Waterfront Trail five years into 25-year plan By Scott M acArthur SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Many years ago, former Mayor Harry Barrett saw the sign and the result came yesterday when Oakville unveiled a new one. Politicians, citizens and Waterfront Regeneration Trust organizers gathered at Fisherman's Wharf in Bronte Harbour, Tuesday morning, to unveil a sign acknowledging five years of work towards improving the town's water front trail. Oakville's waterfront is part of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail, which stretches from Niagara-on-the-Lake through to Trenton. If all goes accord ing to plan, the trail will continue to Kingston and extend onto the American side of the lake. Upon com pletion of the Canadian side, the trail will encompass 37 municipalities for an approximate length of 650 kilome tres. "Many years ago Harry Barrett rec ognized that the key to a successful waterfront was to combine both a cul tural and natural heritage," said David Crombie, founding chair of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust. Oakville's trail, of which there are five points - Bronte Harbour, Coronation Park, Oakville Harbour Area, Erchless Estate and Gairloch Gardens - has served as a catalyst for many new environmental projects within the town. The Bronte Butterfly project and Heritage Trail along the 16 Mile Creek are examples. "The success of the trail to this point speaks to our stewardship and the other SALE PRICES END SUNDAY, AUGUST 13, OR WHERE SEARS IS CLOSED, SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 2 plans we have undertaken shows that we have an environmentally concerned community," said Mayor Ann Mulvale, who joined the Waterfront Regeneration Trust's board of directors about a year ago. "1 joined the board after being approached by David Crombie. It's an opportunity to speak to the use of the trails and something I'm willing and prepared to put time into." Waterfront Regeneration Trust has a 25-year plan, which includes finding ways to improve air and water quality for future generations. "We have built up a lot of momen tum and you can tell that Oakville has really made it a community priority to improve the environment, starting with the gorgeous waterfront here," said KENMORE 1 9.7 -C U . The project to rebuild Lake Ontario's waterfront relies on funding 31 from both the provincial and municipal governments, as well as community and corporate support. The CIBC, to this point the project's main supporter, has donated $1 million over the first five years of the plan. "At CIBC, we are strong supporters of the communities where we work and live," said Elaine Magri, CIBC's Oakville community manager. "We believe that our partnership with the Waterfront Regeneration Trust is an important aspect of our commitment to community development." Mulvale believes the sign, which provides a map to various sites along the trail, will peak the interest of those who enjoy walking and appreciate the waterfront. "Many people in town enjoy our waterfront immensely," she said. "The sign will show them other venues in the GTA that may spark some interest, so I'm sure that many people will be visit ing those as a result."
