14 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, February 4, 2000 Oakville Block Parent program back in business The O akville B lock Parent program has been resurrected, but its needs help from more volun teers if it is going to survive. Last Novem ber the Oakville Block parent program was put on notice that it would be cancelled unless a reliable volunteer came forward to act as chairperson. A ccording to Marianne MacBride, chair o f the Ontario Block Parent program, this gener ated an enthusiastic response from the public and a new execu tive has been formed to run the local program. The new executive o f the Oakville Block Parent program includes: Joan O 'Connor, chair, Lorraine Taylor, treasurer, Pam Damoff, secretary, Laura Lee, registrar and Erica Gilby, public relations. The new executive took office in January and is anxious to expand the program here in Oakville. The number o f block parent homes has dropped significantly given the pro gram's inactivity over the last several years. All block parents in Oakville must submit new application forms for the required re-screening by police. "We are in the process o f contact ing all existing block parents, as well as new block parents. Anyone who received a new application form from the provincial office is asked to com plete and return it to us as soon as pos sible so that w e can update our files. We w ould also like to hear from any one who has a block parent sign but has not yet received a new application form. We hope to have the process com p lete w ithin the next few months", said Laura Lee, registrar o f the Oakville program. Ward 5 regional councillor Liz Behrens, one o f the founders o f the O akville B lock Parent Program in 1976, is acting as an advisor to the new executive. "I am extremely pleased that the initiative that was started almost 25 years ago w ill continue here in Oakville. I have every confidence that the residents o f Oakville will rise to the occasion and support the Block Parent Program." The Oakville Block Parent Program needs help in the follow ing areas: Block Parents: The program would like to see Block Parent hom es becom e a common sight in Oakville neighbourhoods. The B lock Parent sign is a symbol o f safe refuge where assistance is available for those in need. W ithout people w illin g to becom e Block Parents, the program w ill not work. Statistics show that the B lock Parent Program acts as a deter rent in communities where it exists.
