BEAVER |Thursday, M arch 2 , 2 0 1 7 | 10 Victims should come forward: Chief continued from p.12 boards to conduct reviews w as prom pted by a letter from the Ministry of Com m unity Safety and Correctional Services. Addressed to provincial services boards and chairs, the letter from Ontario Minister Marie-France Lalonde stated the Province is "re-examining policing as a whole, working to modernize and standardize police practic es," through its Strategy for a Safer Ontario. The minister asked all police services boards and chiefs to conduct reviews of the way sexu al assault cases are handled, including policies and procedures, at the local level, as well as en couraging them to work collaboratively with community and justice partners. "Once complete, I ask that all findings be shared with m y m inistry to inform our ongo ing w ork to ensure victims of sexual violence feel safe reporting these crimes to police, and that when they do, they are granted the timely and dignified response from our justice sys tem that they deserve," stated Lalonde in the letter. The board will be updated on the status of the review at its April monthly meeting. Board members will also see an inform a tion pam phlet police are working on in part nership with Sexual Assault and Violence In terventions Services (SAVIS) of Halton. The brochure will contain information on how to speak to victims during the interview process and questions to be asked. Unfounded, a Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) term that allows police to close an oc currence, doesn't necessarily imply the service doesn't believe a victim or person reporting. All reported incidents are fully-investigated. A total of 57 unfounded sexual assault cas es in 2016 were examined by Halton police, and determined to have been properly and thoroughly-investigated. Of the incidents examined, 15, or 8.3 per cent, did not occur or could not have oc curred as reported. In the remaining 42 cases, representing 74 per cent of all unfounded sexual assault oc currences, it w as determined through com plete investigations that a criminal offence had not been committed. In a discussion on the board's role in the review, Tanner said the sexual assault training for its officers is excellent, noting its job, in general, is to ensure victims of any crime are well-serviced as m uch as possible. Tanner encouraged all victims to come for ward as often as possible, as they will be "well supported." w w w .insideH A LTO N .com | OAKVILLE lo w e r f o o d p r i c e s Won't Be Beat If you find a cheaper price, sim ply show us and we will match.* Now O pen!
