COMMUNITY 11 | Stouffville Sun-Tribune | Thursday, November 3, 2016 Former resident talks to Canadians from coast to coast Douris is the host of the morning show on CBC Radio 2 Ali Raza aliraza@yrmg.com For one former Stouffville resident, working as a radio host for the CBC is "a dream come true." Raina Douris is the host of the morning show on CBC Radio 2, where she wakes up with Canadians from coast to coast, playing them music and sharing their stories. It's been just a month since she started and the Sun-Tribune decided to ask her how it felt to go from a small town to national radio. "It's been amazing," she said. "The idea that I'm speaking to people all over Canada is pretty incredible. When you let that thought go through your head it's kind of amazing, kind of terrifying, but mostly really cool." Douris began her journey into broadcasting as a student at Markham District High School. CBC was looking for commentary from high school students about the Iraq war and Douris' teacher put her name forward. She suddenly found herself on-air for the first time. After that first taste of radio, Douris moved to Toronto and went to Ryerson University for the school's radio and television arts program. In her second year, she interned at 102.1 The Edge. Having lived in Toronto for a few years by then, Douris had made several friends and contacts among indie bands across the city. "It was bothering me that none of them every got played on the station," Douris said. "So I started this thing called Indie Online, affiliated with the Edge." Indie Online gave Douris the chance to go on-air with radio hosts. Upon learning she'd gone on air without permission, her former boss was angry yet thought her voice was a good fit. He gave her more opportunities on-air until her contract ended. After a stint of unemployment, she made video blogs online featuring local indie bands and eventually got a job with CBC Radio 3. Submitted Raina Douris, born and raised in Stouffville, is now the host of the morning show on CBC Radio 2. "That (video blogs) got the attention of people at the CBC," she said. CBC was ready to offer her a permanent position, but Douris also received an offer from Indie88; the smaller more local Toronto radio station offered her a position as music director and afternoon host. After being with Indie88 for three years, finally in September this year, Douris took her job with CBC Radio 2. "I feel very fortunate to be able to play the music that I like, in the city I want to be in," she said about her new role. Her former program director, Adam Thompson, says it's "no surprise" that Douris is on national radio. "She's forever looking for ways she can improve," he said. "It's rare to find a personality that's intelligent, creative, funny and authentic, she's a real talent." Douris credits growing up in Stouffville for allowing her to be herself. She says she realizes it can be hard for high school students to be themselves in a small town. "Don't be afraid to be who you are," she said. "I got to be on the radio for the first time because I was a loud mouth, the second time because I went on without asking. I just think you have to go for it and be who you are." uReport When you see news happening let us know...
