In the m id-1990s, funding to municipali ties was slashed to record low levels. As a result, property taxpayers in Oakville bore the burden of som e of our most valued projects, including our GO Transit service. It' s easy to forget the reality of those days. As both a longtime resident of Oakville and as a Regional and Town Councillor through out those years, I can vividly recall the chal lenges Halton Region faced to provide high quality services to residents of our commu nity. Looking at Halton today, w e are seeing a complete turnaround in the municipal fund ing model. Ontario government investing in our growing community S Kevin Flynn Ontario Labour Minister Oakville MPP Halton Region receives record funding and co-operation from the current provincial gov ernment -- a sharp contrast to the years of lack of funding and support. In fact, provincial transfers to municipali ties have increased on average 264 per cent -- higher than any other government prior ity. Ontario is also actively consulting on bet ter ways to work together to accomplish re sponsible growth for residents. Since 2003, the Province has responded to growth in our region and continues to ad dress the needs of Halton residents. Thanks to provincial investments, Halton is served by three major hospital builds and rebuilds, including the $2.27 billion Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, the expansion of Milton District Hospital, and the redevel opment of Burlington' s Joseph Brant Hospi tal. Construction is well underway at Oakville' s ErinoakKids facility, w hich will help support children and their families to m eet the chal lenges of everyday life. W e' ve built new bridges and introduced HOV lanes on the QEW We brought in 30-minute GO Train service and we're moving to quicker 15-minute ser vice and cleaner electric trains. W e' ve invested in affordable housing, pov erty reduction and childcare. And w e've made huge investments in el ementary, secondary, and post-secondary ed ucation, including apprenticeships, and our first university campus. Investments like these help to make Halton the best place to live, work and raise a family. W e' ve accomplished so m uch already and it is crucial all levels of government continue to work together.
