The Raiders clinched first place with back-to-back wins over Garth Webb and Christ the King, and followed that up by sweeping Holy Trinity (25 13, 25-12) in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. The semifinal m atch is sched uled for St. Thom as Aquinas on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. The other sem ifinal involves third-place F ran k H ayden and secon d -place B ish op R eding in M ilton at 3:30 p.m . Tues day. Hayden needed three sets to defeat Loyola in the quarter finals while Bishop Reding de feated T.A. Blakelock 2-1. The Halton final is set for Thursday, Feb. 23 at Sheridan College in Oakville. BantamA Hornets win Silver Stick tourney The Oakville bantam A (m inor) rep hockey Hornets went undefeated in Aurora to cap ture the International Silver Stick cham pion ship earlier this month. The Hornets won 2-1 in a shootout against Brampton, which had edged Oakville in an earlier tournam ent final shootout in Detroit. The Hornets broke a scoreless tie late in the third period on a Selena M onardo point shot. Brampton tied the game and following a scoreless overtime, the Hornets' Athena Vasdani and Brooke McIntyre, with the winner, provided the goals in the shootout. Goalies Maddyx Lindsay and Charlotte Guay were outstanding in the tournament, al lowing ju st nine goals in five games, with Lindsay stealing a game in the semifinals and Guay earning MVP status in the final, where she turned away four of the five shootout attempts. "This team truly has heart. They can go down a goal or two but they never quit," said coach Mike Stone. Other m em bers of the Hornets include Tara Blackburn, Jaden Dearsley, Rebecca Di Filippo, Marie Haluk, Jessica Haylock, Sa m antha Levert, Shannon O'Hare, Katie Panizza, Kyleise Rolf von den Baumen, Lauren Schell, Katie Stone and Leena Tawfik. Phil Guay, Je ff Rolf von den Baum en and Rich O'Hare are the assistant coaches and J u lie Levert is the team manager. Cynthia Lind say is the trainer. Nexxice to worlds with four Oakville skaters The Nexxice junior synchronized skating team, which includes four athletes from Oakville, demonstrated its world class skills at the Cana dian world qualifiers and at an ISU competition in Salzburg, Austria. Alycia Giro, Olivia Xie, Isabella Del Villar and Sarah Hayman are Oakville skaters who helped the Burlington-based junior team win the championship at the Winterfest world qualifier competition in Mississauga in midJanuary. Nexxice won the championship with 164.05 total points, qualifying the team for the ISU World Junior Synchronized Championships as Canada 1. The worlds are being held at the Hershey Centre March 10-11, the same location where Nexxice won the gold. The Canadians are in Calgary next weekend (Feb. 24-26). A week after Winterfest, the juniors skated both of their programs beautifully in Salzburg, according to coach Trish Perdue-Mills. The U.S. edged Nexxice for the champion ship, winning by .35 points as Nexxice took silver. Nexxice's short program is skated to the mu sic from Eminem and the free program is a mix of music from the movie Saving Mr Banks and the Broadway musical Mary Poppins.
