Dimitra Kasimos, Halton's manager of Enteric and Vectorborne Disease Program, said the increase in rabies cases originates from Hamilton. In December of 2015, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) notified the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care a sick raccoon captured in Hamilton had tested positive for rabies. This was Ontario's first raccoon rabies case since 2005. Kasimos said the raccoon came from New York State -- likely hitching a ride to Ontario on a transport truck or train. As a result, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry started raccoon rabies vaccine baiting operations in Hamilton, with hand baiting in the areas where the first positive raccoon was found and later aerial baiting. Kasimos said Halton's health department would continue to monitor the situation. So far, all cases of raccoon rabies have been in the Aldershot area of Burlington. After someone is exposed to rabies, Halton Health says timely use of the rabies vaccine can prevent the rabies illness. While the rabies vaccine is extremely effective if it is administered before any symptoms occur, there are a number of things you can do to protect your family and pets from the threat of rabies: · seek medical attention immediately if you come in contact with a raccoon, skunk or other potentially rabid animals; · report all animal bites or scratches to the Halton Region Health Department; · warn children to stay away from any wild, stray or aggressive animals; · do not touch dead or sick animals; · do not feed or keep wild animals as pets; · make sure a pet's rabies vaccinations are upto-date; · keep pets on a leash when off property; and, · any pet that has come in contact with a raccoon or other wild animal should be seen by a veterinarian.
