Halton Catholic District School Board trustees have approved a plan to begin design work on four new elementary schools across the region. They also approved additions and renovations for another four of the board's elementary schools. Over the last several years, the board has opened two new elementary schools in Oakville and one in Burlington. Construction is under way on a new elemen tary school and a new high school in Georgetown, and plans are in place to build a new high school in Oakville. As well, a number of the board's older schools have enjoyed major renovation work. With many of its schools at or over capacity, the Catholic school board is eligible for provin cial grants to construct new buildings in rapidly growing areas of the region. The situation is in sharp contrast to that faced by the Halton District School Board, which is looking at closing a number of under-utilized schools in order to receive provincial funding for new building projects. Provincial funding for new schools is only available to boards with an overall shortage of space across their system. Those like the Halton public board, which have excess capacity, although it may be in the wrong geographical areas, are not eligible for money to build new schools. Two of the Catholic board's new elementary schools will be built in Oakville. West Oak Trails will get a new school for September 2003 and Iroquois Ridge will see a school open the follow ing September. The other two new schools are planned for east Milton, to open in September 2002, and the Orchard community in Burlington, planned to open in September 2003. .
