Friday October 13', 20()tf " 1 THE OAKVIL'l'E BEAVER i" 11 Sheridan Elder Research Centre receives second $600,000 grant The Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) has received a $600,000 grant from The Ontario Innovation Trust. The grant matches an August grant to the Centre from the College Research Development Fund. SERC is an interdisciplinary, applied research initiative focused on issues associated with aging. The aim of the Centre is to create a unique environment for applied research into areas of practical concern and immediate relevance to older Canadians, those who care about them and care givers. While the traditional focus of geron tological research has been based on medical intervention, SERC's approach will be psychosocial and geared to building on and reinforcing the strengths of the aging population. "Our experience in Sheridan's Social Service Worker-Gerontology Program, and our analysis of existing data, sug gested a real need for a different approach to gerontological research, one that acknowledges that aging is a stage of life offering opportunities rather than impediments," said Pat Spadafora, SERC Director.
