Toronto, June 18.â€"The installation of the Mest Rev. Fergus Patrick Mc- Evay, D.D., formerly Bishop of Lon- don, as the Archbishop of Toronto in succession to his Grace Archbishop O’Conner, was the occasion of a bril- liant and impressive ceremony in Stl Michael’s Cathedral yesterday mom- ing. The event was distinguished by the presence of his Excellency the Papal Ablegate, the Most Rev. Donaâ€" tius Sbarrctti, Archbishop of Ephesus. and by many of the leading priests of the Roman Catholic Church in On- tario. The notable gathering was aug- mented by scores of clerical representa- tives from different dioceses, apart from those of the Archdiocese of To- ronto. St. Michael's Cathedral was filled with people. Where the clergy were counted in scores, the laity were num- bered by hundreds. Headed by acolytes, carrying book. candle and censor, and followed by the priests of the diocese, and the visiting and diocesan priests, the archbishop’s procession passed from the palace along Shuter and Bond streets to the main entrance of the cathedral. The short route was close- ly lined with many hundred spec- tators, but the greatest order was maintained without any interference from the small squad of police on duty. and the stately procession pass- ed along without any difficulty. Fol- lowing the diocesan clergy came a. long array of high dignitaries of the church, and bishops of other dioceses, not. only in the province of Ontario. but from far down by the sounding sea, who delighted to do honor by their preswnce to the new archbishop. Es- corted by a bodyguard of the Knights of St. John. in their quaint uniform, and with drawn swords, Archbishop clothed from head to foot llcl‘ivzly. in golden raiment, With his CI'OSleI' in} his hand. came immediately after. The visiting bishops and the proces-i sion Cllm‘nd with another small body: of lllv priesthood. Outside, the square which surrounds the church was lined on every side by interested spectators. while within every avail- able spot except the centre aisle. down which the procession would pass, was occupied. As notice of the expected approach was ‘made, Very Rev. J. J. McCann, the Vicar-Gener- al of the Archdiocese, in cope of gold and accompanied by Rev. Fathers Goyle and Trayling, wearing dalma- tics of the same costly fabric, moved down the aisle to .I eet the procession at the door. As the surpliced train entered the im- mense concourse of people rose and to the strains of musical note from the organ and from sweet-throated boys, the procesion slowly made its way down the aisle. First came Rev. J. Mc- Grand in surplice and dalmatic of cloth of gold, bearing aloft the gold- ed processional Cross. Supporting him were six acolytes and following these was a large contingent of the black-robed Brothers ‘of the schools. Next in order came the priests of the diocese and visiting clergy, one buns tired and sixty in number, and as they reached the sanctuary rails they Opened ranks to allow the purple-cas- - I . . y _ .il;: tilt AT ST. 'As the bishops entered the sanc- tuary, Archbishop McEvay knelt for a few moments, after which the ini- tiatory psalms were chanted. When the Archbishop had taken his place upon the throne prepared, the Very Rev. Vicar-Regal McCann as- cended the pulpit and read the Papal: Bulls appointing Archbishop McEvayl to the See of Toronto. They were dated at Rome the 23rd of April. At the close the priests of the Archdio- cese gathered around the throne to kiss the ring of the new Shepherd and to give public testimony of their al- legiance.
