2 5 |Thursday, January 26, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Letter to the Editor M P Dam off provides latest info on airplane noise issue I would like to respond to an article posted Jan. 23, 2017 on InsideHalton.com enti tled Pearson expansion will benefit Halton; no word on Oakville noise issues: GTAA. but I am committed to bringing my constit uents' concerns directly to those who can. I have taken those concerns directly to NAV Canada, where I continue to strongly advocate for any reasonable measure to reduce aircraft noise and frequency. Last year, NAV Canada awarded a con tract to Helios, Bo Redeborn and Graham Lake consultants to undertake a third par ty review of Toronto airspace. Helios is an aviation consultancy firm based in the United Kingdom with exten sive knowledge of and involvement with operational and aviation noise issues at many major airports in Europe and else where. Helios has already conducted a number of public meetings in Oakville about the is sue, and I am looking forward to hearing the results of their consultations. Shortly after being elected, I met with the Honourable Marc Garneau, Canada's Minister of Transportation about the issue, along with other GTA Members of Parlia ment whose constituents are negatively impacted by airplane noise. I continue to work with the Minister and his staff on the issue. Last September in the House of Com mons, Rob Oliphant, Member of Parlia ment for Don Valley West, asked Minister Garneau to update the House on what he is doing about concerns raised about air plane noise. Minister Garneau thanked MPs from the GTA for raising this important issue and assured the House that mitigating noise is something they continue to work on within the parameters of maintaining aviation safety. He passed the concerns on to the CEO of Nav Canada. My office has attended all Helios consul tations thus far. The next consultation is scheduled to be held on March 2, 2017, at 6:30 pm at St. Luke's Community Centre, Main Room at 3114 Dundas St. W. in Oakville. This is the third of four consultation pe riods. Unfortunately the article is sorely out of date and does not reflect the progress made thus far in the ongoing consultation process. I am writing to provide you with the most current information. The change of flight paths that occurred in February of 2012 has impacted many families in north Oakville. I have heard first-hand about the nega tive impact on health and peace of mind that excessive aircraft noise has had on the community. The responsibility of aircraft noise com plaints is downloaded to the local airport authorities; specifically the GTAA. However, flight paths, also known as Standard Terminal Arrival Routes, or STARs, are determined by NAV Canada. As a result, the local airport authority has no jurisdiction to implement solutions, For those who wish to register a com plaint about airplane noise, they can do so with the Toronto Pearson Noise Office either by phone at 416-247-7682 or on line at torontopearson.com/noisemanagement/# . I commend the work undertaken by Oakville Town Council to highlight the is sue of airplane noise to date. I am committed to creating healthy, liv able communities, which includes manag ing the negative impacts on health and peace of mind that excessive aircraft noise has on the community. Sincerely, Pam Damoff, Member of Parliament Oakville North-Burlington Editor's Note: The article referenced was changed to remove information that was no longer valid.
