The friendship bench is an initiative launched in 2 0 1 5 by Sam Fiorella, who was inspired to take action after the death of his son, Lucas, in October 2014. Lucas took his own life after suffering in secret with depression for several years. Fiorella established the friendship bench as a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting conversation among young people about mental health, with a view to reducing the incidence of suicide among young people -- now the second leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years. Smoother roads on the horizon for drivers in Oakville this year A smoother, safer, more convenient commute for drivers in Oakville is expected after town council approves the 2 0 1 7 road resurfacing program. A $ 9 .4 million budget for road repairs will lay the groundwork for repair of 34.3 kilome ters of pavement in 2017. "Council has once again made road resurfac ing a priority in our capital budget," Oakville Mayor Rob Burton stated in a media release. Seventy-seven per cent of respondents in dicated they were satisfied overall with the program, while 14 per cent expressed dissat isfaction. Road and works on the job "Our roads and works staff have a track record of getting projects done on time and under budget," said Burton. "I would like to join our residents in ap plauding their great work." Avoiding future repair costs "Leaving a road in poor condition incon veniences commuters, reflects poorly on our neighbourhoods and becomes more costly to repair in the future." The Town' s road resurfacing program re habilitates and improves the condition of Oakville' s 1,600 lane-kilometres of pavement, including localized repairs and patchwork to curbs and sidewalks.
