Reeve Owen or Campbellford Elected War- denâ€"Ferguson, Thorndyke, nonaldson, Preston, Vance and Barnleu‘lt promin- ent on Committees. C. L. Owen, Reeve of Campbellford, elect- ed warden, our Reeve and those of the townships take prominent places on the committees. On Tuesday of last week the council of the united counties met at Cobourg and at 7.30 p. m. forty-nine members answered to their names at the call of the clerk, after which nominations for warden were re- corded. The contest lay between Reeves Gunyo of Brighton and Owen of Campbell- ford. On the ï¬rst ballot Gunyo took 17 votes and Owen 13, with other Reeve fol- lowing in the wake of Owen. After a num- ber of lallots hal been taken, Owen was elected by 30 Lo 19 and conducted to his seat by his mover and seconded. Mr. Owen addressed the council briefly, thanking them for the unexpected honor and asking that they should not expect too much from him. Messrs. Fowlds, Preston and Underw0od \vere scrutineers and ably attended the ted- l ious work. On motion of Messrs Doyle and Mitchell, all the reeves of the various minor munici- palities were appointed a committee for the ensuing year. Mr. McCallum gave notice that he would move the Council into Committee of the whole to conï¬der a motion for a more equit- able basis of taxation. The council adjourned at 10.30 to meet again on Wednesday afternoon at- 3 o’clock. Mr. J. .1. Preston, Reeve of Manvers, was appointed chairman of the committee to ' strike the standing committees. On Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock the speczal connnittee appointed to strike the various standing committees met, Mr. Pres- ton in the chair. The Council met on \Vednesday at 3 p. m. The warden read his address. He gave awarm welcome to the new members, es- pecially those from Port Hope He pointed out the business that would come before the council. High School Trustees would have to be appointed. A committee was to be appointed to enquire into the . validity of the Treasurer’s sureties, in ac- cordance with the act. The assets were $07,000 and the expenditures $66,000. There wasa balance of $1,316.38 It was small owingto the fact that all the expenses of the Narrows bridge, which was recently completed, had all been paid. He pointed out that it was aeccessary to have full re- turns of all lands in arrears for taxes. He sincerely thanked the council for the great honor they had conferred upon him.
