With a toast to the New Year Foreman, singing star of CBC’: ERNIE HARKER WRITE-S .TO LOCAL FRIENDS FROM ENGLAND Dear Comrades:. ‘The first thing we wish to do on writing to you is to thank you most sincerely for the grand gift which you presented to us before we left Millbrook. Also we wish to thank all the ladies of the committee for the grand lunch and pleasant even- ing which you arranged for us. In short, thank you one and all. We had a grand trip over the Atlantic. Nothing like the troop ships I can tell you. Grand service, grand food and plenty of things to do for enter- tainment. The weather was very nice and the sea not too rough. In England it is, well, most of you know what it is like, some rain, some sun, some cloudy and some foggy, but altogether it is quite passable. ‘ I have a job with a building contractor as an all-round man. I am not quite sure What that means yet, but what I have been doing it means a little bit of everything. I drive a lorry (truck to you) delivering ma- terials to . the various places where there are jobs being done. Then too I mix mortal‘ for the brick-layers or help the 'carpenters and just about everythino. Some roads are just Wide enough to get the truck through. If you meet anyone then you either run up the bank or back up till there is a gateway where one can pass. ’ The family are all well and We are getting settled nicely We are thinking: of getting a ;'ri';:ii-’_*1' ti) live in as. homes are ijlhi impossible to get. The English beer is quite nice but doesn’t seem to have as much kick as the Canadian, although it seems nicer to drink. The pubs are very dead compared to the way they Were during the war. No trou- ble getting up to the bar, in fact, they are almost deserted most times. Everything shuts up at six in this village, so that means that you have to be sure to have everything you need before that time. Yours truly, E. Harker. Ha! Ha! 'Jimmy' QUEEN ST. W.
