FRIDAY. JUNE 15 [$4. EON. 8.H. BLAKE, Q. 0., AT OAKWOOD._ The electors of Mariposa will be glad to hear the announcement that Mr. S. H. Blake will speak at Oakwood on Thurs- day next, the 2lst inst, at 8 p. m. Let there be a crowded house. HON. G. W- MORE STRAVV. Evidences are rapidly accumulating to establish the fact beyond cavil that f the factors introduced into the one 0 present campaign in the hope of defeating the government of Sir Oliver Mowat is the patron movement. Mr. Anderson, in a capital speech at Brown’s school-house on Monday last, confronted his audience with incontrovertible facts supporting this conclusion. He reminded his hearers that the patrons were vigorously oppos- ing Sir Oliver Mowat personally, as well as other members of the cabinet, while no patron candidates were put up against the leaders of the opposition, and furth- ermore, that three reformers were opposed by patrons whilst only one conservative had such opposition. We need go no further than our own county to establish beyond question of a doubt that the patron movement is hand and glove with the P.P.A. movement, both of which are friends of Mr. Meredith in his onslaught against the government. At Mr. Bryans’ organization meeting at Oakw'ood there were present tories who during the afternoon were vigorously can- vassing reform patrons in behalf of Mr. Campbell, and the discovery of this fact fortunately opened the eyes of one or two reform patrons who had been up to then deceived by the professions of the tory Evidences are establish the one of the fact: preaent campaigl patrons. Reformers must understand that Mr. Meredith, too weak alone to overturn the Mo wat government, is now having his pur- poses served by tory patrons who are tories ï¬rst and patrons last, but who are vigor- ously canvassing reform patrons in behalf of Mr. Campbell in order that the reform vote shall be divided between Dr. McKay and Mr. Campbell, and Mr. Bryans, the tory, shall slip in between. Once for all, let no reformers be deceived. A greater piece of hypocritical canvassing was never known than that of some tory pat- rons whose names we could mention, canvassing reformers during the day and studying the voters’ lists at night in Mr. Bryans’ committee rooms. We warn re- formers that should Mr. Bryans be elected the tory patrons next day will recognize their reform friends with a chuckle and a laugh at_the way they have been gulled and deceived. Mr. Campbell has quarreled with Tm: POST because of 81 which was overlooked through there being more than one John Campde in Mariposa. A heavy thing to Iquarrel about, and a still less reason for his opposition to Dr. McKay and his passive resistance to Mr. Bryans. Neither Mr. Campbell nor any of his friends op- We would make no reference to these mï¬erï¬which are somewhat of 3 personal character, were it not that the tory pat- rons ere using themaou to prejudice Dr. McKay with reform patrons. It may jut: atwellbeknown ï¬rst is last that Hr. Oimpbell has thrown off the mask pose Mr. Bryan: at any of his meetings, but wherever Dr. McKay appears there Mr. Campbel and his supporters are in opposition to him. One explanation of this is ofl'ered in the fact that Mr. Camp- bell asked Dr, McKay for the registry oï¬eein behalf of a relative andwas re- fused. Although we are sorry to believe it of Mr. Campbell. yet the battle that is being waged against Dr. McKay by Mr. Campbell and his friends indicates some- thing beyond party difl'erences, because as a matterof fact. the Mowat govern- ment, more than the opposition, are in accord with the patrons, ngduy. It is, of course. not hard to under- stand why “the utmost enthusiasm†should have prevailed during the recent conference between Mr. Marter and the Ottawa conservatives. The Ontario “strong box,†which Principal Grant spoke of, would furnish rare “plunder" for a gang which has feasted and fatted upon Dominion resources until the pick- ing has grown thin. The tens of millions of timber limits which Ontario still possesses in the territory saved to us by Sir Oliver are regarded as legitimate prey, and the Ottawa horde licks its lips in anticipation of what it could easily he in possession of the “strong box." Much as we dislike to discourage the “enthusiasm†of Mr. Meredith’s Ottawa allies, we must caution them against being too sanguine. Doubtless, in their efforts “to beat Mowat" they are counting much upon the aid of the patrons. But, as we have before pointed out, the patrons’ platform is almost entirely in accord with liberal principles, and contains nothing of importance but what all good liberals can and do submribe to. On the other hand, with perhaps one single exception, â€"â€"that relating to the fee systemâ€"every plank in the platform is abhorrent to the average tory. It is true that the conser- vative papers are studiously careful about expressing an opinion on the new move- ment, but it is quite apparent that, ex- cept in cases where the P. of I. candidates are uncompromising tories, as the late Sir John Macdonald said of the French Canadian, they have, “no use for the breed.†The leaders of the patron move- ment well understand this, and those of them who are elected to the next legis- lature will not be likely to support the party which regards their aspirations with disdain and contempt. As to the P. P. A., the other disturb- ing element in the present campaign, it would appear that Mr. Meredith. by and with the aid of his Ottawa friends, will be able to command the support of this faction. In East Toronto, the greatest hot-bed of toryism in Ontario, the conservative candidate was afraid to face the music before becoming a member of the P.P.A.
