Traditionally, there are always some students who register to attend both the area Catholic and public high schools, then make a final decision at the end of summer. However, if all 85 students decide to attend the Nottinghill Gate school, the board will be facing a serious space crisis, admitted Sweeney. Housing them would require four additional portables to be added to the already crowded school site -- four portables that the board doesn't have permission from the Town o f Oakville to install and probably can't obtain until mid-October. Even if only a portion o f those stu dents on the waiting list actually regis ter, the school will likely start the year with two classes housed in the library. And talk o f a possible teacher strike at the public school board only makes matters worse, adds Sweeney. "If there is a strike a week next Tuesday in the public system, we're going to have hordes of students at our doors," he told trustees. "W e're already starting to get the phone calls saying, "We've heard there might be a strike, can we register at your schools?" ' The board had originally hoped to have a new Catholic high school open in northeast O akville for this September, but encountered problems with negotiations for a site on Trafalgar Road. Recently, trustees decided to aban don the Trafalgar Road site and pur chase a site on Sixth Line instead. Construction on the new school is due to begin this fall. However, admitted Sweeney, that won't help the situation at Loyola this year or next fall. "We can't build schools fast enough to accommodate the situation we're in," he said. The board has a legal obligation to provide an education for all students who wish to register.
