The concert will include his musictheatre collaborations with Brecht as well as songs from his Broadway musicals. Lander, who extols Weill's success on Broadway in the 1940s after he and his wife immigrated to America, says his lyrics always deliver a mes sage, anti-apartheid for example, along with the music. Most people, she adds, will remember him for songs such as Mack the Knife, Sep tember Song, and Speak Low. "In the early '60s a production of Three Penny Opera was finally brought to New York City. It was a huge smash. And, of course, it brought Lotte Lenya to audiences in New York," says Lander. "In the '70s I was chosen to star in a Boston pro duction, at which point all the Weill songs were put together in one show. And this show was brought to Broad way in 1972 (and titled Berlin to act to follow, Lander says it took her many years to interpret W eill's music to her satisfaction. And, she adds, she never thought she'd have the opportunity to do it again as she did on the Boston stage. `T o come back to these marvelous lyrics as a mature woman is wonder ful," she says. "W hen I have the opportunity to do his music, it's bliss." Lander has managed to present some of Weill's work in Toronto dur ing the last decade, including a spot in Taking Her Act and Putting It (Back) on the Road, in which the Oakville singer tried to revive cabaret in the mega-city. She claims Canada is lagging far behind Europe and the United States in recognizing Weill as a great composer whose work has influenced the songwriting tARTAN terrors of many others. One o f her dreams, she says, is to record a CD o f Weill music. "I know I'll get there," she says. "It is one o f my great loves. Today, there are young performers who are starting to do Weill. His music is timeless." Lander plans to continue performing his timeless music whenever she can and to continue teaching voice with Oakville's West End Studio Theatre (W.E.S.T.). In fact, she says, the first class of vocal students she taught with W.E.S.T. was so successful that she decided to add a chil dren's class, beginning this fall. "It was a wonderful experience for me. It's a great stu dio and I have a great deal of respect for Yo (Mustafa, artistic director)," she says. "I feel that it's the place where I belong, creatively...I'm happy to teach and do some per forming that I love to do." Lander was also filmed at the Oakville Centre recently singing a song that she wrote for a former teacher o f hers, Portia White. That performance, she says, will be aired on Vision TV in the fall as part of a film on White. Before that though, her sultry voice can be heard as it joins the voices of other well-known performers to show case Weill's music in Kurt Weill 100 at 8 p.m. on Satur day, July 29th in the University o f Toronto's Hart House Theatre, 7 Hart House Circle.
