12 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 21, 2000 Tomorrow' s leaders being trained today ummer Camp means games, crafts, sports, sw im m ing and trips to local attractions. The positive experience enjoyed by campers would not be possible without the hard work and plan ning of many people, especially YM CA counsellors and their directors. But how did they get to be as good as they are? For many Y counsellors, their training began at the tender age of 13 in the Leadership-in-Training camp. This year's three-week LIT pro- S PO STCARDS FR O MCA M P gram has recently ended, with 33 youth learning the skills required to become successful leaders. Throughout the program the LIT's worked to improve their leadership, com m unication and problem -solving skills through daily activities and challenges pre sented to them by Y staff. LIT campers then had plenty of opportunity to practice their new skills. They performed volunteer work with seniors at a local recre ation centre and with children at Junior YMCA day care centres. One afternoon was spent wash ing cars in order to raise money to provide financial assistance for a child attending camp. While the primary goal of the Leadership-in-Training Program is to prepare young people for future roles requiring leadership skills, we did take time out to have fun with a trip to Wild Water Kingdom and Planet Laser. The Leadership-in-Training Program is ju st the first step towards becoming a camp coun sellor,, with many campers pro ceeding through the Counsellorin-Training Program. We hope these campers will continue their association with the YMCA, using their new-found skills and talents as volunteers and, later, as counsellors charged with training a new wave of future leaders. Over half of this year's camp volunteers are past LIT's and CIT's who are not yet old enough to work for the Y, but are spending weeks of their sum m er giving younger campers the benefit of their experience. The YMCA is very proud of its future leaders. We believe that each and every one brings with them som ething different and unique as they join the Y team in providing campers with a exciting and satisfying experience.
