But in today's over crowded, over-extended hospi tals, you're lucky to find a bed. Privacy is fast becoming an old-fashioned luxury. But the people behind the new wom en's diagnostic centre at OTM H want that to change, at least here in Oakville. Joining only one other hos pital - Toronto's Mt. Sinai - this fall, O akville's only hospital opens its own wom en's diag nostic health centre. The new $1 m illion women's diagnostic centre will eliminate tiny cramped change cubicles, the labyrinth walk from one end of the place to the other for one test or another and c u rta in s -in s te a d -o f-w a lls between patients. More than the simple provi sion of privacy in a place that has had very little, the inte grated im aging centre will eliminate the current five to six-week waiting list for ultra sounds and mammograms. It's gratifying to see money earmarked for something that is clearly a female issue: while 60% o f ultrasounds are done on male patients, 99% o f patients A booking mammographies are female. Last Sunday, 436 runners and 186 walkers joined togeth er to raise $16,000 for this wor thy cause, in the annual OTMH 5 km Classic. And, while I have to agree with my new brotherin-law on this one, grumbling about the "fun" run he entered in the Beaches last week that was anything other than Fun, the Classic is a terrific event. Every year, the Classic ear marks funds towards a special hospital venture - last year, it was the emergency department; this year the new w om en's diagnostic centre. The new centre will provide patients with convenient access to mammography, ultrasound and bone density services, all currently offered at the hospi tal. But instead of traipsing all over the place, the three areas will be grouped together in one location. Plans include appropriately sized procedure rooms, private change areas and better consul tation facilities. In a nutshell, privacy. What do the staff say about it all? A loud hurrah. Not surpris ing, since the whole idea of a women, s diagnostic centre came from them. Asked what the reaction of staff was to the approval of the concept, ultra sound sonographer Danica Prusic was blunt: "Exhilaration." "Currently we do what we can for the patients, of course," added senior technologist for mammograms and bone density Elaine O 'Neill. "But we are often dealing with patients with a high degree of anxiety; emo tions are high." She said these patients must wait outside in the X-ray wait ing room along with many oth ers, walk along corridors past often critically ill patients in hallways and then be ushered into a tiny change room where men could be on either side of them. The area is just too over crowded to offer anything more. Walk through today's ultra sound and mammography area and there is a sea of curtains around beds, the only option in a cramped place where the number of patients contin ues to rise. As much as the staff may try to ease the anxiety, it's difficult if there are patients on either side and only a cur tain between the two of them. Privacy is at a premium. "It's a bit of a M.A.S.H. unit," admits Prusic, adding the staff got quite a lot of input from patients before submitting the final plan. "We have very good equipment, but not a lot of room. This will make it so much better." The provincial government pledged half the money; the remainder will be raised by hospital fund-raising. The Classic is a small, but impor tant part o f the plan to make life a lit tle better for the m ostly fem ale patients booking these appointments. Hats off to the people making it happen.
