SIX NATIONS - Charles Harnick, Attorney-General for Ontario, spent Tuesday, February 17 in Six Nations.
He was positive about his experience, saying "it's interesting for me to see the community."
Harnick said he was "very busy" during the visit. He spent the morning with Six Nations police, and praised the new facility calling it "very impressive".
"I'd also like to say that I was quite taken with the enthusiasm of the officers," commented Harnick.
It is Harnick's first time meeting with the Chief in the local community, but he has had a lot of different meetings with Chief Staats over the years.
Harnick said that the economic development planning on Six Nations is going very well. He has followed the economic policy development of the community over the years, and has had many very positive discussions about it, says Harnick.
The Attorney-General also paid a visit to the Land Claims

office. He says that he is gathering information, but is reluctant to make any public comment on a matter that is before the courts. The Attorney-General said that all parties are interested in coming to a resolution, and the lawyers are doing the speaking on the issue right now.Harnick agreed that the land claims issue might come up during an afternoon session of council, but that it was not the focus of the meeting, which was closed to the public.
In response to an inquiry concerning the establishment of a justice system based in the local community, Harnick said "that's something we should be talking about. It would be good for the community, assuming that there is a consensus here. The people would have to want it."
Harnick admitted that the Native justice system issues would "most likely be brought up."
