To stay safe, people should keep a 72-hour emergency kit nearby, as the first three days after a sudden crisis is critical, according to a release from the fire department. Electricity, gas, water and telephones may not be working and public safety services, such as police and fire departments, may not be able to reach you immediately. "W inter emergencies can be the m ost chal lenging because there is often little or no warning," stated Andy Glynn, Deputy Fire Chief and community emergency manage- m ent co-ordinator, in a media release. "In the event of a severe blizzard or pow er outage, your family should have enough food, water and essential items on hand to be self-sufficient for at least three days." Along with non-perishable food items and bottled water, the emergency kit should in clude a crank radio, flashlights, batteries, footwear and clothing, toiletries, medication for all family members, cash and important papers.
