Novena I Obituaries ARMSTRONG, Marian Elaine (nee MacNeill) Passed away peacefully on December 8, 2016, at Highview Residences, London surrounded by the love of her family. Cherished and beloved wife of the late Richard (Dick) Armstrong (2013) for over 60 years. Survived by her devoted daughters Janet and Linda and very special sons-in-law Greg Carr and Mark Enns. Predeceased by her brother Walter MacNeill (2005). Marian was born on June 23, 1930 in Toronto, Ontario. She attended the University of Toronto where, in 1952, she obtained her BSc in Occupational Therapy. She practised her vocation in Montreal until she and Dick started their family. With Dick's career, many moves took place bringing the family to Peterborough, Brampton, Saginaw (MI), Oakville and Burlington. Ultimately Marian and Dick moved to London to be closer to their children. Marian and Dick met at Twin Lakes (New Liskeard) in 1939 and the cottage would play a significant role for the rest of their lives. The family enjoyed spending their summer holidays at the cottage and upon retirement the cottage served as their summer home. Marian was a devoted wife and mother who brought joy and love to their lives. Family was foremost the most important thing in her life. Marian was known for her kindness, compassion for others, creative nature, lifelong friendships, wonderful entertaining and sense of humour. A family interment will take place in the spring of 2017 at the New Liskeard cemetery where Marian and Dick will once again be reunited. The family would like to thank Dr. John Jordan for his compassion and understanding and exceptional care at her bedside. We would also like to thank the 'front line family' at Highview for their outstanding care and the love and respect they provided to Marian and her family. For information and online condolences, please visit www.westviewfuneralchapel.com DOBSON, Valerie Maureen (nee Hayward) September 13, 1939-December 8, 2016 Survived by her first husband, Brian, her husband John, brother Les, her two sons Philip and Stephen and her wonderful grandson, Miles. Valerie programmed computers from the Ferranti Pegasus in the 1950s to the latest equipment when she retired in the early 2000s. She was a voracious reader, loved the arts and attended numerous Canadian Opera Company and National Ballet productions as well as plays by amateur and professional companies. She was an enthusiastic hiker and a long-time member of the Bruce Trail (which she hiked end-to-end) as well as several naturalist groups. Valerie traveled widely in Canada from Newfoundland and Labrador to the Yukon, Europe, England, the U.S., New Zealand and Australia. During her illness she received compassionate and dedicated care from staff at the Carlo Fidani Cancer Centre, Heart House Hospice, Wellspring and others. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at OAKVIEW FUNERAL HOME 56 Lakeshore Rd W. (1 block east of Kerr St. Oakville). At the Oakville Memorial Hospital, on December 8, 2016 from cranial injuries resulting from a fall. Orest was born in Toronto in 1936, the son of Ukrainian parents. He earned his Honours B.A. (University College) at the University of Toronto, his M.A. from the University of Chicago (where he was a William Rainey Harper Fellow), and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He taught in the Department of English at University College from 1961 to 1986, during which time he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Humanities Center of the Johns Hopkins University from 1968-1969. He created a Canadian Literature Programme for Atkinson College at York University. After completing his LLB (with honours) at Osgoode Hall Law School, he received his Call to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada in March of 1975. In his law pursuits, he served as Senior Counsel to the Public Guardian and Trustee of the Province of Ontario. He was a speaker at many academic conferences and published both academic and legal papers. He was active in the Ukrainian community becoming the President of the Ontario UkrainianCanadian Committee and served as a member of the Ontario Multicultural Committee. Then he served as First National Vice-President of the UCC, as it then was, and in a variety of positions with the Ukrainian-Canadian Congress, and the Ukrainian-Canadian Professional and Business Federation. He spent a sabbatical year in 1993-1994 in Kyiv, as Director of Law Training and provided for young Ukrainian professors by way of exchange with Canada, the U.S. and Europe, through the auspices of the Ukrainian Legal Foundation. He monitored that programme for two years. Also, he was engaged in three of the quasi-war criminal cases as launched by the Department of Justice (Canada) against naturalized Ukrainian post-war citizens, against who allegations of fraud and consequent sanctions of deportation were threatened. He continued his law practice, restricted mainly to estates and estates litigation. Also, he returned to his academic origins by pursuing research into a variety of areas of intellectual history, including that of the assassination of Simeon Petliura and the judicial proceedings consequent upon his murder. He ended a 50 year association with the University when he became a member of the Senior Faculty at the U of Toronto, a member of its Executive Committee, and was given the title of Senator (which he did not use). Orest is survived by his wife, Maureen Ellis, and two daughters, Katherine and Nicola, a step-son Kevin (Lippert) and step-daughter Kari (Lippert), eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He will be very much missed as a proud husband, father, grandfather (didi) and great-granddad (gg). Many thanks to the very kind doctors and staff at the OTMH who worked on his case.
