"What ClubLink wants to do is stab Oakville in the heart... just rip it right out of there. It' s a very sad day that it has come to that," said Brandt. The Oakvillegreen Conservation Association released a statement Dec. 13, forwarded to the Beaver, which said the fight with ClubLink is about the "right of the citizens and Town of Oakville to shape the type of community we live in." "ClubLink thinks it has the right to make several billion dollars or more by developing a property that is zoned as private green space. With that much money on the line, (it is) willing, and able, to outspend the Town and citizens groups... but Oakville citizens are not going to be silent," the group said. Oakvillegreen is concerned the OMB will "take this fight out of our hands and force another backroom deal like the one sealed recently for the development of the Saw-Whet Golf Lands." "Ontario's Smart Growth Plan was created years ago to curb urban sprawl. Municipalities, through their Official Plans, were able to identify growth areas in their communities, preferably where there was already urban development, to avoid sprawling into open green spaces," Oakvillegreen stated. "Glen Abbey is one of these open green spaces, and as such, should not be developed." Regarding Oakvillegreen's media release, most of Visentin's concerns are the number of "factually-incorrect" statements it had, the ClubLink senior vice-president said. In particular, he cited one sentence in the statement that he charged erroneously GAGC represented a "whopping 535 acres," when it's actually 231, he pointed out. "There is a dramatic difference in the size, but it (the statement) goes on after that," said Visentin, noting he hadn't had time to give a proper response to the statement because of publication deadline. ClubLink is aware of the petition and believes it is part of the process for people to express their opinions, Visentin said, which is what its "gameplan" is. "It' s to get feedback from people and have that conversation with the people that attend the open houses," said Visentin. He said those who are "most adamantly opposed" to the plan haven't reached out to ClubLink for a direct conversation. "They're doing this without having that conversation with us directly," he said.
