People are helping Rosie today, and in future continued from p.1 13 | Thursday, December 15, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com more than it already has, with the Rosie Sparkles Fund, where donations are being collected to help the family financially as they begin to retrofit their home to be wheelchair accessible. A GoFundMe.com page has also been set up and a Holiday Bake Sale at Canadian Tire, 400 Dundas St. E., on Dec. 18 starts at 9 a.m. The local fundraiser was started by Ashley McCurley, whose daughter is best friends with Rosie. It will include a raffle with numerous prizes, such as Toronto Maple Leaf tickets, which have been donated from local families and businesses. The Long family took to the GoFundMe.com page to share with the community how grateful they are for the support they've received during this challenging time in their lives. They're hopeful she'll be discharged from McMaster Hospital in Hamilton in the next few weeks and say they're sure their once healthy, active daughter will eventually want to train for the paralympics. Her head was well protected by her cycling helmet, which prevented any head and neck injury. However, the last month has been a whirlwind of ups and downs as Rosie underwent numerous surgeries after suffering a spinal cord ischemia, which is essentially a stroke in her spinal cord due to prolonged and severe low blood pressure in the small blood vessels that supply the nerve column, the family stated. Rosie Long, was an active, healthy 10-year-old. She now may not walk again after being struck by a school bus while riding her bicycle on the way to school Nov. 7. | gofundme She will need a wheelchair to get around as a result. "Exactly what other functionality she will have from her lower abdomen down is not yet apparent, nor is it clear whether she will have any sensation in her legs: the pathways for motor control messages and for sensory messages are in different spinal cord "bundles" and while Rosie is still in spinal shock (a sort of self-protection mechanism where the body shuts down some base reflex reactions after a spinal injury) it will remain unclear exactly how her recovery and rehabilitation will play out," the family wrote on the GoFundMe.com page. When ready, her care will be transferred as an inpatient to the Bloorview rehabilitation centre in Toronto, which specializes in rehab for kids with spinal injuries. The family expressed their hope she will meet people in similar circumstances that will provide her with the courage and inspiration she'll need to face the "enormous hurdles ahead." In the meantime, the family says they're working on making the adjustments in their home so it's ready for Rosie's eventual return. "The whole family has been overwhelmed by the support we have received from the community -- from keeping us in your thoughts, to cooking the most amazing meals for us, to walking the dog, looking after the boys, and for the financial assistance for groceries and gas -- and myriad other kindnesses we have been shown," they wrote. "And of course a huge thank you to all of Rosie's friends who have sent such wonderful cards and gifts to keep Rosie's spirits up in hospital. We are, and will continue to be, grateful to all of you as we begin to adjust to our `new normal' and work to get Rosie home again." The fund is for Rosie's future needs. Meanwhile, a man was charged with fail to yield from a private driveway, contrary to section 139(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.
