Barber shares his story continued from p.9 "Your mothers and fathers, if they're under the age of 60, have no concept of what war is about." When Barber travelled across the GHTA to speak to different groups, a Hamilton public school, female Kindergarten student was one of 27 raising their hands at once with a question. She wanted to know what a veteran was. "I said to her, ` Well, when you join the Armed Forces, you're a civilian. After six or seven weeks, they change you into a sailor, sometimes a soldier, sometimes an airman,'" Barber recalled. After training and going into battle overseas, where Barber faced dangerous situations, he told the child, "you become a changed man." "He knows deep in his heart, the only people he can actually explain this to were his fellow veterans because they will understand," he said. Two years ago, Barber discussed his story with St. Dominic students in oral history interviews and facilitated a Grade 7 class trip to the HMCS Haida in Hamilton. The Korean War veteran also supported the Oakville students at Queen' s Park during a presentation of the Lieutenant Governor' s Ontario Heritage Award for Youth Achievement. "We honour Mr. Barber for his dedication to his country and how his service symbolizes the dedication of all men and women who served their country. His outreach to children of this community is truly appreciated," said Taryn Silvestre, Grade 8 student and emcee. Following Barber' s presentation, students paid tribute to aboriginal veterans. A video of their contributions and involvement in different wars was shown, which preceded speeches on several key figures and battles. Silvestre spoke of the Six Nations in the War of 1812, Julianna Parsons shared the story of Edith Anderson Monture in 1917 France, Clayton Kollee discussed Cpl. Francis Pegahmagabow, while Marissa Denno talked about Cpl. Huron Brant in 1943. A recording of a West Coast native drum song was played following the stories. "The stories of Aboriginal Canadians are often overlooked or forgotten. This point was eloquently expressed by Gord Downie, lead singer of The Tragically Hip, at WE Day in Toronto this past month," said Silvestre. Students Kyla Morrison, Grade 7, and Jessica Caya-Germaine, Grade 8, spoke of two fallen Canadian soldiers. Morrison recounted the life of Sgt. Craig Paul Gillam, while Caya-Germaine highlighted the experiences of Capt. Nichola Goddard. Germaine then recited In Flanders Fields against the backdrop of soldiers who returned home, but couldn' t find peace due to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Lauren Faria, Grade 6, sang Amazing Grace against a backdrop of images that portrayed the sacrifices of the Canadian Forces. The event concluded with a singing of O Canada. 1 1 |Thursday, November 17, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com B h a n d a r i F a m ily D e n t i s t r y r e t u r n s t o O a k v ille BRING iN YOUR FAMILY FOR A CHECK-UP AT OUR NEW MODERN CLiNiC Dr. Bhandari is an advocate of oral health with 3 1 years of experience.
