www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 10, 2016 | 2 Police release PSA on driving safety for Crime Prevention Week Halton police are getting involved in Crime Prevention Week (Nov. 6-12) by making public appeals about driving safety. The service has produced a public service announcement to raise awareness about distracted driving. The sobering 30-second video about the potentially tragic consequences of distracted driving is available at https://youtu.be/ IO0jun2GZpQ. It also will be showcased in local movie theatres throughout Crime Prevention Week. The idea for the video was developed via input from of one of the officers in Halton police's Collision Reconstruction Unit, who has been responding to motor vehicle fatalities for years. He noted a common experience when responding to an emergency call is the messages received on victims' phones during initial investigation. He described the impact on an investigator who knows the loved one sending those messages is unaware of the situation and will soon have to be notified that the person died in a traffic collision. Halton police say residents continue to identify traffic safety as a priority. Officers will focus on distracted, aggressive and impaired driving. "If you observe a vehicle being operated in a manner that places you or anyone else in danger, please call 911," said Halton police Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah. ".... As a professional racecar driver, safety comes first when I am on the track and on the roads.... As (an) honourary police officer, I am proud to announce the PSA about distracted driving will be featured during Crime Prevention Week," said IndyCar winner, Dancing with the Stars contestant and Oakville resident James Hinchcliffe. Police are asking the public to relay traffic stories or ask crime prevention and traffic safety questions through the service's Twitter accounts (use hashtag #CrimePreventionWeek). Anyone who witnesses dangerous driving in Halton is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), www.haltoncrimestoppers.com or by texting Tip201 with your message to 274637 (crimes). inside today's Spotlight Health Beaver Trails Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 38 41 Arts Sports Classified 42 44 49 For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online at www.oakvillebeaver.com Ashley Furniture, Pharmasave, Metro, M&M Meats, Home Hardware, IDA, Lastman's Bad Boy, Hoopers Pharmacy, Rabba, Rona, Current Power, Deserres, Real Canadian Superstore, Sobeys, No Frills, Lowes, FreshCo, Food Basics, Suntire Canada Inc., Todayz Branding, Michael's, Koffee Korner, Bombay Furniture, Bowring, National Sports, Home Outfitters, Fortinos, Globo Shoes, Hudson's Bay Co., Longo's, Mark's Work Wearhouse, Shoppers Drug Mart, Brick Mattress, Walmart, McKesson, Centennial Windows, The Source, Home Depot, The Brick, JYSK Bed & Bath, Sears, Leon's Furniture, Hello Fresh, State Farm, Best Buy, Canadian Tire, Rexall Pharma Plus, Carter's, Toys R Us, Monastery Bakery *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes They proudly served Canada.
